The silicon content of cane leaf sheaths is a sensitive reflexion of soil reserves in combined silicon, hence of the degree of laterisation of tropical soils through leaching of this element and accumulation of aluminium and ferric hydroxides. The manganese content of this tissue faithfully reflects the degree of base desaturation conducive to soil acidity. On the other hand, the calcium content of cane sheaths is a poor indicator of the degree of base desaturation of soils. Consequently, organized leaf sheaths surveys for Si, Ca and Mn contents in cane growing countries may lead to useful contributions concerning soil science in addition to their already established value in connection with mineral soil amendment recommendations for cane production improvement. | |
