The hydraulic performance of a porous-pipe lateral produced from recycled automobile tyres and designed for sub surface micro-irrigation was evaluated in the laboratory. The porous pipe, a new type of drip lateral made up of fine rubber pellets mixed with a thermoplastic binder and extruded into a tube of 16mm internal diameter, weeps water through its entire surface as water is passed through it under pressure. The laboratory tests aimed at (i) determining the effects of applied pressures and filtration on emission rates of the product, (ii) assessing the uniformity of water application of the system under the different operating conditions, and (iii) assessing friction losses and friction parameters affecting flow rates. | |
