Unsuccessful attempts have been made in the past to increase maize production in Mauritius and diversify the agricultural economy, which is dominated by cane sugar production. Such efforts are now being renewed and the intention is to attain self-sufficiency in maize by 1990. The annual per capita consumption is presently 16 kg, most of which issued for livestock feed, but in 1984 Mauritius produced only a quarter of its maize requirements, the rest being imported. About half of the maize in Mauritius is grown in sugar cane interrows, the other half in rotation with sugar cane. Most of the maize is presently produced by sugar estates but recently other producer groups have also started to show an interest in the crop. The main constraints in maize production are land scarcity, occurrence of tropical cyclones and of drought, insufficient shelling and drying facilities, and relatively low economic proditability. These are discussed in relation to research objectives and achievements. The role of extension, and the planning and organisation of production, are also described. | |
