Maize and rice are the main staple foods in Rodrigues. Maize is by far the most important food crop of the island but yields are low for several reasons : eroded soils, irregular and insufficient rainfall, damage caused by cyclones and susceptibility of variety to diseases. Only the traditional extensive system of production is practised. Planters grow local varieties with little or no inputs. They are faced with socio-economic constraints and numerous problems associated with the climate, soils, varieties and lack of infrastructure. In this paper, are reviewed the production and utilization of maize, constraints to production and possible solutions, and the efforts being made to develop the crop. | |
