An island wide survey of potato plantations was carried out in Mauritius in 1989 to obtain data on the status of the leaf miner Liriomyza trifolii Burgess (Diptera : Agromyzidae) and of Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera : Thripidae). The area covered represented an equivalent of 218 ha and 429 ha in full stand, in the 1st and 2nd season respectively. Because of the economic importance of these tow pests to potato cultivation, short term measures, mainly in the form of insecticide treatments, had been recommended to the planting community during the early years of their introduction. However, the efficacy of these treatments, especially that of methamidophos against the leaf miner, invariably led to an abuse of treatments, which were being applied more as a preventive covering than as a curative measure. To minimize dependence on chemical control, a pest management project was initiated in 1985 with the importation and release of natural enemies of the leaf miner, and testing and recommendation of appropriate insecticides. Results of the survey provide information on the effect of varieties, climatic zones and different treatments on insect damage. These are discussed together with observations on parasitism. Recommendations are also made as to future orientation of studies on control of these pests. | |
