The feasibility of using vinasse in the K fertilization of sugar cane was studied in three field experiments in Mauritius. Soil pH was hardly altered in spite of the high acidity of the vinasse (pH 4.0). The growth of the cane, including the plant cane, was not adversely affected by the use of vinasse in the furrows at the time of planting (with rates up to 15 000 L /ha). No differences in cane and sugar yield were found when the K source was either vinasse or muriate of potash, provided the same amond of K2O was supplied. Application to cane fields as a viable method for disposing of vinasse is thus confirmed. | |
