The effects of N, P and K on potato yield, petiole and tuber composition and nutrient uptake were evaluated over a three year period in field trials in the major production zones of Mauritius. N and K applications did not consistently improve yield but the response to P was most significant at all rates. Nutrient levels in petiole and tuber were significantly increased with N and K but not with P. Nutrient uptake by tubers showed that the potato crop had a high requirement for K. Soil P and K threshold values for maximum yield were estimated to be 175 ppm P and 0.6 m.e. per cent K, using 0/1M H2SO4 as extractant. Analysis of soil for available P and K were found to be necessary for the recommendation of optimum P and K rates. | |
