A series of industrial trials was laid down in 1977 to obtain additional information on factors affecting growth, sucrose content and regrowth in fields treated with the ripener "Polaris". Reduction in stalk elongation following the ripener treatment depends primarily on the variety as well as the environment and may not be translated in a proportional reduction in fresh weight yield at harvest. The results have confirmed that the product increases sucrose content significantly in varieties such as M13/56, M377/56 and S17 when applied at the rate of 4 kg/ha about 9 weeks prior to harvest. Once again the response of variety M93/48 was lower than that of the other varieties. The development stage of the plant and the presence of diseases at the time of spraying particularly in variety S17 have been shown to affect the increase in sucrose content. The addition of the low drift substance Nalcotrol or spray volumes higher than 70 1/ha did not have any marked effect on the response to the ripener. Symptoms of poor regrowth in the subsequent ratoon crop have been shown to be temporary and even in severe cases the decrease in yield may be insignificant. | |
