Since 1989, many Mauritian sugar estates have, because of a shortage of labour, tried mechanical planting. Two types of mechanical cane planters have been introduced, namely, the biller planter and the horizontal feed wholestalk planter. Mechanical planting has been unsatisfactory up to now and a high rate of recruiting is necessary in most cases. Trials have been laid down to determine the reasons for the poor germination rate associated with mechanical planting. The economic aspect of this operation is also discussed. Emphasis is laid on the necessity of improving the efficiency of mechanical planting as it is most likely that the present tendency of labour shortage will persist. | |
