Trials conducted in pre-emergence of weeds iindicate that thiazopyr at 0.48 kg a.i. ha -1 tank-mixed with atrazine or diuron at 2.0 kg a.i. ha -1 provides good control of weeds in sugar cane for at least 12 weeks and is comparable or superior to acetochlor + atrazine or diuron at 2.3 + 2.0kg a.i. ha -1. Thiazopyr controlled grasses such as Digitaria horizontalis, Digitaria timorensis and panicum subalbidum at 0.14 kg a.i. ha -1 and was less effective against most broad-leaved weeds except at 0.56 kg a.i. ha -1 where a satisfactory control is obtained for some species. Adding atrazine or diuron at 2.0 kg a.i. ha -1 to thiazopyr improved the spectrum of weeds controlled. Cane measurements revealed no adverse effect of thiazopyr alone or in mixtures on growth of two cane varieties. Thiazopyr is a good alternative to acetochlor as it controls Panicum subalbidum, currently a problem weed in many sugar cane fields, and its low dosage can reduce further the total amount of herbicides (active ingredients ) used in the sugar industry. | |
