This paper reviews the current research and development work being carried out in the Biomass Integrated Gasification Gas Turbine technology (BIG-GT). On the basis of results obtained with biomass and net calorific value (NCV) of bagasse at 49 per cent moisture, it is estimated that with a yearly production of 5.5 million tonnes of milleable cane, 1450 GWh could be generated for the national grid if all bagasse produced could be utilized for electricity production using the BIG-GT technology, once shown to be technically and commercially viable for bagasse as raw material. This high amount of electrical energy could be obtained if the steam requirement for juice processing, i.e., the specific steam consumption (SSC) is not higher than 340 kg t -1 cane. With a similar SSC of 340 kg steam t -1 cane for juice processing, the potential amount of electricity available to the grid annually with the conventional steam cycle and condensing extraction turbo generator sets is estimated to be around 600 GWh. In comparison, the electrical energy supplied to the grid by the Central Electricity Board (CEB) for the year 1995 was 1047 GWh. | |
