The functioning of sugarcane nurseries at pre-release stages is described principally with respect to their importance in the breeding programme of new varieties. The primary aim is to provide the planter with planting material of good quality in amount pro-rata to his area under sugarcane. The various nursery stages a new promising variety has to go through before release are explained, the requirements of the system and the problems they raise are discussed and the various steps taken to improve the system exposed. The responsibility of all concerned, including the planter receiving the new variety is pointed out. | |
