Yellow spot disease in variety S17 was controlled profitably with aerial sprays of fungicides Thiophanate-methyl and Benomyl when infection was between 7 per cent and 22 per cent in early April. Under such levels of infection one, two or three sprays, applied between April and mid-May reduced the incidence of disease in flowered stalks of S17 resulting in significant increases in sucrose content. Three different patterns of disease evolution with low, medium and high foliar infection in early April have been identified and are important in deciding the number and timing of sprayings at any particular location. One or two sprays are recommended when infection lies between 5 per cent and 22 per cent in early April while three applications are probably effective for infection levels between 22 per cent and 30 per cent but the feasibility requires further evaluation. | |
