Prior to the 1961 crop five fully automatic 48" x 30" ASEA-Landsverk centrifugals fitted with Ward Leonard drives were installed at Mon Loisir sugar factory for the curing of low-grade massecuites. Three of the machines were designed to run at 1450 r.p.m. and two at 1700 r.p.m. Experiments carried out during the 1961 crop have shown that: (i) provided power is available, it is a better proposition to reach full speed in 3 than in 4 min as the higher acceleration rate does not affect the quality of the sugar produced and results in an increase of about 6 per cent in capacity for a total cycle time of 15 min. (ii) A 48" x 30" centrifugal running at 1700 r.p.m. has 25-30 per cent more capacity than a machine of the same dimension running at 1450 r.p.m. for the curing of low-grade massecuites. Sugar of better quality is obtained with the higher-speed machine which can cure more viscous massecuites than the slower centrifugal. (iii) It is possible to reduce appreciably the sucrose losses in molasses by lowering the temperature of the water used for reheating final massecuites. | |
