This review covers the performance of the twelve sugar factories which operated in Mauritius during the 2002 season. Length of season, cane quality, milling work, boiling house performance, sugar production, sugar quality and energy production are examined and compared with values for the 2001 season (bracketed). All parameters were calculated from data supplied by the sugar factories. The 2002 crushing season has seen a reduction in both cane and sugar production (respectively 15.0 per cent and 19.3 per cent) compared with those of the 2001 season, which was the best of the last decade since 1987. This was due to cyclone Dina on 20-22 January, which affected both cane yields and the sucrose content in cane. | |
