In Mauritius, sugar cane is cultivated on some 72 000 ha representing 42per cent of the total land available. About 570 000 tonnes of sugar from 5.5 million tonnes of cane are produced annually. Bagasse is used for the production of electricity that is exported to the national grid and represents 20per cent of the energy needs of Mauritius. In fact, renewable energy from sugar cane biomass has always been on the agenda of the sugar industry and co-generation is not new as Mauritius has been a pioneer in this area with electricity being sold to the grid by factories since 1957. In 2004, the energy equivalent of sugar cane biomass represented 480 kilo tonnes oil equivalent (ktoe) compared to imports of 800 ktoe of petroleum products. While there were 11 factories exporting 318 GWh of electricity produced from bagasse in 2004, it is expected that by year 2011, there will be only 4 factories that will produce around 700 GWh of electricity using the conventional extraction steam turbine with steam pressure of 82 bar. | |
