The results of two experiments on intercropping plant sugar cane with tomato are presented. The first involved six determinate tomato cultivars and was conducted in three locations. The sugar cane inter-rows were 160 cm wide and tomato was direct seeded in every inter-row and every other inter-row. The second experiment involved three determinate tomato cultivars conducted in two locations. The sugarcane inter-rows were alternately 227 cm and 93 cm wide and tomato was planted by direct seeding in one and two rows in every 227 cm wide inter-row. Cane and sugar yields were unaffected in the first experiment by both methods of planting tomato and the results suggested that cultivars MST20/13, MST21/23, MST25/7 planted in every cane inter-row should be recommended. The results of the second experiment showed that tomato in two rows in every 227 cm cane inter-row was not detrimental to cane and sugar yields. Such intercropping should receive consideration in ratoon cane as well as in plant cane. | |
