A brief description of the method of establishing a tobacco plantation is given. Formerly, growers had to essentially resort to hand-weeding to clean their fields, whereas according to the results obtained in the trials described in this paper, at least two chemicals, oxadiazon and diphenamid, can be safely used as a pre-transplanting treatment. Other chemicals, namely, oryzalin, dinitramine and metobromuron have proved phytotoxic to the crop. Oryzalin and diphenamid, applied as post-transplanting treatments have also shown an unacceptable level of phytotoxicity. Oxadiazon at 1 kg a.i./ha has been the best treatment, combining crop safety and efficacy on weeds. | |
