Basic and applied aspects of drip irrigating sugar cane were included in a research project initiated in 1983. The results obtained to date are presented. An acceptable soil wetting pattern has been demonstrated with 2 and 4 L/h emitters spaced at 0.75 and 1.0 apart respectively. Agronomic and economic factors must be considered with respect to dripline type and placement. A deficit irrigation water regime would lead to reasonable cane yields only when rainfall is evenly distributed. Leaf growth is the first plant process to be affected when the plant experiences water stress. Two irrigation scheduling methods have been compared as well as differences in variety response under drip. | |
