Within the context of rising energy cost and limited water resources drip irrigation of sugarcane has been perceived as an alternative to overhead irrigation in Mauritius. Alongside the agronomic and soil physics investigations into drip irrigation initiated under the MSIRI/IH Drip Irrigation Research Project, a comparative study of the economic and financial viability of the two systems of irrigating sugarcane was undertaken. Data from the Project trials were complemented with data secured by annual surveys carried out on estates for the period 1981 to 1985. On the basis of information obtained, models purporting to reflect operational conditions and performance in the three major ecological zones of the island were constructed. The main parameters of the models are described. The basis for estimating capital and running expenses for the irrigation systems are given. The method and data used for assessing yield increments from irrigation under the three conditions of operation are detailed. The relevant economic and financial rates of return are then calculated and the implications of the results, taking into consideration the island's agricultural policy, are discussed. | |
