A semi-micro chemical oxygen demand (COD) apparatus offering the alternatives of colorimetric and titrimetric methods of estimating COD, after sample digestion in custom-prepared vials, was evaluated against the standard macro method as reference. Reagent mixture for digestion was prepared in the laboratory and the corresponding colorimetric and titrimetric methods were developed, and subsequently evaluated against the reference method. All methods were found comparable in precision and acuracy. It is proposed to dilute all effluent samples to less than150 mg/L COD prior to digestion in laboratory-prepared reagents followed by colorimetric estimation. The method provides an inexpensive, simple and rapid pollution control tool for day-to-day monitoring of sugar factory effluents. | |
