The course of dry matter synthesis and NPK absorption by first and second ratoon canes fertilized in September were studied at four locations differing in soil or climate. The results obtained showed that absorption of the three macronutrients followed the same pattern and was in phase with tiller formation. Following fertilizer NPK application, active uptake occurred with the absorption rate attaining a peak in December before declining to near negligible level by harvest in August. Dry matter production rate on the other hand only attained its maximum in March. Fertilization in fact did not alter the course of NPK absorption but enhanced their accumulation rates over at least part of the growth season with the result that at harvest more NPK was recovered and dry matter synthesized. | |
