Many measures have been identified to meet the additional sugar quota of 85 000 tonnes, among which, the conversion of some 2000 hectares of tea lands to sugar cane cultivation. All operations on tea lands, except soil tillage and furrowing, are performed manually. High soil moisture content resulting in poor in-field trafficability is the main limitation to mechanization. With increasing labour shortage and costs, ways and means of utilizing agricultural equipment have to be found. As little experience has been qcquired in the field of mechanization under such conditions, preliminary recommendations are given for operations ranging from uprooting of tea busches up to cane planting. As regards the mechanization of some cultural operations up to loading, only suggestions are made. | |
