The MSIRI has so far achieved great progress in the production of sugarcane varieties that meet the various objectives of the sugar industry through a judicious choice of parental varieties based on past selection data, the selection of parents based on IT systems followed by the use of appropriate mating system and selection strategies. These procedures are critically reviewed in the light of future needs. Various methods have been employed to estimate the potential of crosses and the likelihood of selecting themost promising crosses that have the greatest potential for producing commercially acceptable genotypes. Consideration is also given on making breeding strategies less sbjective and more genetically and statistically illustrated by the assessment of twenty biparental crosses at the preliminary stages of selection over two contrasting environments. | |
