Sugarcane yellow leaf syndrome has been associated with the presence of a luteovirus, termed sugar cane yellow leaf virus. In some varieties from Mauritius, symptoms are not consistently observed in all the leaves of a infected plant. The polymerase chain reaction was used to test for an eventual correlation between the presence of the virus in leaves from symptomatic and symptomatic plnts of different varieties. The presence of the virus in plants with and without symptoms was confirmed by RT-PCR. This test proved to be more reliable that the ELISA technique. | |
