Lack of water is one of the main limiting factors in the production of tomato in Mauritius. The aim of this study was to assess the yield response of two popular tomato varieties MST 32/1 and Sirius to deficit irrigation. Two trials were carried out at Pamplemousses in 1999 and 2000. Results showed a curvilinear relationship (yield = -0.002x2 + 0.11x - 2.5; r2 = 0.88, x = water received) with about 300 mm of water giving the highest yield of 15.5 t ha-1. It was found that yield response to irrigation decreased markedly beyond the 0.75 ETc regime due to deep percolation losses and a decrease in the harvest index. Whether water is limiting or not, it may be better to irrigate at 0.75 ETc so as to limit the amount of rotten fruits and to optimise fruit size and quality as well as yield. | |
