Abstract (AB)Results of three trials are discussed. In the first, the highest yield of 164 tonnes/ha of 15-month-old plant cane in irrigated plots compared with 74 tonnes in rainfed plots. Comparison of irrigation control based on measurement of soil water potential with control based on estimates of cane potential evaporation showed no significant differences between the amounts of water applied or between the cane and sugar yields. In the second trial involving intercropping with short-cycle food crops, a tall crop such as maize depressed cane yield as a result of competition for light as against water. In the third trial, no significant differences were noted in a 4th ratoon crop between emitter-type and double-chamber drip lines. Investigation of the effects of irrigation stoppage on stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis, leaf water potential, stem and leaf extension and dry matter accumulation and partitioning showed that leaf extension was the first process to be affected. Fieldmeasurements of the distribution of soil water potential using tensiometers showed that a bulb-shaped wet zone developed around the emitter; the size of the zone was a function of the balance between the amount of water applied and that abstracted by the crop. Using a small number of tensiometers and simple management rules allows the size to be controlled. Soil water potential is related to root growth, leaf water potential and leaf extension rate.
