Abstract (AB)Using Rapid Rural Appraisal methods and with the active participation of the staff of the Agricultural Services of Rodrigues and of a few farmers, six types of farmers have been identified in Rodrigues. This typology of farmers is based on the source and level of income of the household and on the end uses of the agricultural produce. Households of types 1,2, and 3 farmers have off-farm incomes that vary from low (type 1) to moderate (type 2) to high (type 3). Their levels of off-farm income condition their use of resources and of inputs, their choice of agricultural activities, their attitude to risk and their production strategies. Households of types 4, 5 and 6 farmers have little or practically no off-farm income and are therefore dependent on agriculture for a living. At one extreme, type 4 farmers are very poor and practice semi-subsistence agriculture, while at the other, type 6 farmers have large commercial enterprises. Since the different types of farmers are likely to respond differently to institutional improvements and development initiatives, a strong case is made for the agricultural services to target their activities to the needs of the different farmer types.
