| Despite its small size, the island of Rodrigues displays a diversity of farming systems which can at times be complex. Thus, households pursue a mix of agricultural activities in different agro-ecological zones simultaneously, while often earning off-farm income. On the basis of a Rapid Rural Appraisal, three main farming systems have been identified. This paper described the main characteristics of each farming system, analyses the major hindrances besetting them, and identifies farmers' strategies to ease system constraints. The contribution of the respective farming systems to the future development of the agricultural sector of Rodrigues is then examined and conditions for ensuring such contributions are identified. The dynamics of Rodrigues farming systems are also emphasized and the necessity for targeting specific recommendations underlined. | |
