Abstract (AB)Sugar production in Mauritius increased rapidly after the second world war as a result of an extension of the area under cane from about 50,000 to a maximum of 82,000 ha in slightly more than 15 years. Total production which was originally about 300,000 tonnes doubled during that period. Further increase during the last 25 years to attain an average of about 650,000 tonnes annually has come from greater productivity per unit area, the result of improved technology following research. The greatest improvement has been that of cane yield which has shown an average increasr of about 1 per cent per year on both millers' and planters' land. However, the production gap between the two groups has hardly narrowed. Increased productivity and higher efficiency have been achieved by better land preparation, use of higher yielding varieties adapted to the various environments and to be harvested at different periods, rationalization of fertilizer use based on foliar diagnosis techniques, development of efficient irrigation, better weed, pest and disease control, adoption of efficient methods of cane loading and transport. Further increase in sugar productivity should come from the development of irrigation and by improving yields of small planters.
