Abstract (AB)Liriomyza trifolii appeared in Mauritius in 1979 and became a major pest of potatoes in 1980. Its population was very high during the earlier half of the 1980 season and then decreased to stabilize at a much lower level. The insect was also observed on twenty-five other vegetable crops but damage to these was not comparable to that on potato. Two distinct types of injury are caused to the foliage: mining by the larvae and puncturing by the adult females. Damage due to feeding punctures by the females was not negligible, and reached about 7 per cent of leaf tissue destroyed. Leaf mining always begins on the lower leaves and works upwards, suggesting that infestation is associated with leaf age. This was reflected by more rapid infestation late in the crop and in cultivars having a shorter growth cycle. Insecticidal tests indicated that methamidophos, omethoate and decamethrin give effective control. Four hymenopterous parasites were reared from L. trifolii. It is believed that their combined action has been an important factor instabilizing the pest's population.
