Abstract (AB)The offsite movement of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and herbicides (diuron, atrazine, acetochlor and hexazinone) was studied in Mauritius from January 1997 to June 2001 in a silty clay loam soil under sugar cane receiving more than 3000 mm rain annually. The data obtained from a 54 ha catchment with 5° to 12º slopes showed that dissipation of the fertilizer N and P and of herbicides rapidly reduced their concentrations in the runoff soil zone. The risk period during which surface water is most liable to herbicide or fertilizer contamination was defined as being of not more than one month following agrochemical application. The rapid dissipation of the agrochemicals coupled with the long time lag (>6 weeks) between application and occurrence of first runoff resulted in agronomically insignificant loads of P, N and herbicides being moved throughout the duration of the study. Less than 1.0 kg total P ha-1 yr-1, not more than 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1 and less than 0.25 percent of the herbicides were moved by surface runoff. However, the insignificant amounts of N, P and herbicides moved could raise their concentrations in runoffs and in rivers to values above the generally accepted limits. Minimum tillage planting and trash mulching had a negligible effect on offsite movement of the agrochemicals. Managing diffuse agrochemical contamination of surface waters should best be done at source.
