Abstract (AB)The industry will no longer have a market for its raw sugar with the phasing out of the Tate and Lyle Refinery in the UK and the Mauritius Sugar Syndicate in consultation and agreement with the stakeholders has been able to secure a remunerative market for the Mauritian sugar. This sugar is meant for direct consumption and it will be in the form of refined white (75 per cent of the production) and specialty sugars (25 per cent). With the implementation of the MAAS Action Plan, the sugar industry is expected to evolve as given in the Table1.4 and Figure 1.4 respectively. The prevention of loss of polarization and weight during storage and transportation has great economic value for both the manufacturer and the refiner, although the working qualities of the sugar in the refinery interest the refiner more directly, the manufacturer is also concerned to avoid discrimination against his product. Unless, the sugars have been properly monitored for their quality parameters, as agreed between the buyer and the supplier, such sugars would not be able to find a market.
