Abstract (AB)It is possible to apply a grade score to represent the relative worth of individual seedlings for commercial cultivation so that the progeny mean of such ratings bears a close relation with mean weitht per seedling. From the results which are presented it is seen that caution should be exercised in any comparison of the mean grades of progenies measured at different sites or at different times. In assessing the comparative worth of different families, the mean weight per stool or the mean grade is a good guide where the differences between the means are large. Very poor combinations can be discarded on the basis of their average performance. The theoretical worth of families not showing large differences in grade may be found by calculation of the number of seedlings which are likely to have to be examined to find one of commercial quality. The theoretically expected proportion of seedlings from different families of a grade sufficiently high for preliminary selection, was shown to be closely related to the actual rate which would have been adopted. Selection intensities calculated from mean and estimated genetic standard deviation could be used to judge the worth of families. Another result suggests that the selection rates employed in seedlings selection are a guide to the worth of each cross in producing commercial varieties. The repetition of 'proven crosses' is discussed and it is suggested that greater advance will arise from the selection of seedlings arising from new parental combinations than from crosses repeated many times.
