Abstract (AB)The search of Diatraeophaga striatalis Towns. (Tachinidae) in Java, its collection and shipment to Mauritius for the biological control of the cane moth-borer, Proceras sacchariphagus Boj., are described. Over 650 male and female flies were released in Mauritius in June-July, 1961, but there is no evidence that the parasite has become established in the island. Using material received from Java, Diatraeophaga was reared in the laboratory in Mauritius, Trinidad, India, and Pakistan but the stocks were eventually lost, primarily owing to the reluctance of the flies to mate in captivity. It was determined that the parasite may be reared upon Crambid moth-borers other than P. sacchariphagus, which is the only known natural host. Salient features of the biology of Diatraeophaga, as determined by laboratory rearing, are described. Essentially, its biology is similar to that of the Neotropical Tachinid parasites of cane moth-borers. Data acquired upon cane moth-borers and their parasites inJava are presented, including new records of hymenopterous parasites.
