Abstract (AB)During electron microscopic examinations of sap of noble canes infected with sugar cane bacilliform virus (SCBV), filamentus virus-like particles were found in clones Iscambine Striped and M27/16. Similar particles have been found in the USA in canes from the World Collection of cane varieties in Florida. The particles are c. 1400-1600 x 12 nm and have a structure similar to clostero viruses of subgroups C or I. Hence, the name sugar cane clostero-like virus (SCCV) has been applied to the new disease. The syndrome of SCCV has not yet been fully established owing to co-infection with SCBV, but it is thought to cause small chlorotic spots in M27/16 and Iscambine Striped. Diagnosis by ELISA did not prove reliable owing to the presence of mixed antigens to SCBV in the preparations used to immunize rabbits. By immune electron microscopy (IEM), using the same antiserum, SCCV was diagnosed in four noble canes, manely B3390, John Bull, Port Mackay and Tombiapa and in the commercial variety M351/57. Preliminary data are presented to stimulate research on this new disease which has recently been found in four commercial varieties Malawi and, like SCBV, could be of world wide occurrence in sugar cane.
