Abstract (AB)Farm planning is necessary to increase the area under sugar cane which can be harvested mechanically and to enable the harvesters to perform efficiently. The optimum field requirements of the cane harvesters in operation in Mauritius have been identified and include fields with slopes of up to 12 per cent and a minimum cane row length of 200m. Derocking and levelling of soil surface and design of soil conservation measures are important factors to be considered. An approach to farm planning for mechanical harvesting of sugar cane has been proposed and relates the machine requirements to the existing fields and identifies the land improvement and soil conservation measures needed.
