Abstract (AB)Clostero-like particles of sugarcane mild mosaic virus (SCMMV) were detected in Mauritius for the first time in 1991 in clone M27/16. Symptoms present on the variety were a chlorotic striate mosaic and narrowing of the leaf at the base. Surveys carried out in the noble cane collection at Réduit showed that 6 out of the 127 accessions had similar symptoms. SCMMV was observed in all of them after a partial purification step prior to examination by immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM). This used an antiserum prepared from clone Selemi Bali co-infected with sugarcane bacilliform virus (SCBV), provided by Prof. B. E. Lockhart (Univ. of Minnesota). In addition to the varieties, SCMMV was also found in 17 other clones showing leaf freckles. The number of particles per field as observed by ISEM was low and ranged from 1 to 5. All the SCMMV infected clones were also co-infected with SCBV which was in general present in greater number than SCMMV. Diagnosis of the virus from crude sap by DAS-ELISA using purified gamma globulins from the Selemi Bali antiserum was not conclusive.
