Abstract (AB)Flow rate of steam produced at a cane sugar factory from two low pressure boilers of 16 bar each, and steam consumed by steam turbines driving the mills and by a quadruple effect evaporator were measured. The results obtained were used to explore the possible steam economy in three different scenarios: the present set-up, the electrification of the factory prime-movers with low pressure steam of 16 bar and a quintuple effect evaporator, and in the third scenario, a high pressure boiler of 80 bar, a condensing-extraction turbo-generator set and a sextuple effect evaporator. The consumption of live steam per tonne of cane for the three scenarios were found to be respectively 440 kg/t cane, 336 kg/t cane and 122kg/t cane for providing the power house needs and those of the exhaust steam were respectively 441 kg/t cane, 368 kg/t cane and 295 kg/t cane for the processing needs of the factory.
