Abstract (AB)An epidemic of rust (Puccinia arachidis) developed on groundnut in Mauritius, after the reintroduction of the fungus in the island in 1975. All varieties cultivated, Virginian and Spanish types were highly susceptible and the disease appears to be a potential threat to groundnut production if uncontrolled. Losses from groundnut rust, which have been found to be of the order of 70 per cent in some trials, were considerably reduced through weekly applications of Dithane M-45 (zinc and manganese ethylemebisdithiocarbamate, 80 per cent) or Daconil 2787 (chlorothalonil - tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, 75 per cent).
