Abstract (AB)A study was undertaken to determine the residual effect of rock phosphate applied at planting and the effectiveness of annual supplementation of soluble P on cane and sugar yields. Rock phosphate applied in one single dressing in the furrows at planting was found to be adequate for a crop cycle of seven years. This was true even in very deficient soils. Further additions of triple superphosphate in plant cane and ratoons did not extend the beneficial effect of rock phosphate. A reliable soil test which will give a measure of residual P was found necessary for future P fertilizer recommendations.
