Abstract (AB)In Mauritius, research on sugar cane is carried out by the MSIRI, created in 1953 and ranking as one of the most proficient centres for sugar cane research in the world. MSIRI, in fact, has a biology sector which comprises breeding, entomology, pathology, biotechnology etc. carrying out a great deal of research in biology. The knowledge in those sectors are imparted through talks, seminars etc. and through visits of the departments. To improve technology transfer, the MSIRI is also engaged directly or indirectly in technical education whereby its scientific staff are called upon to lecture in applied biology at the University of Mauritius and also to act as co-supervisors for students at graduate and postgraduate levels; many of the graduates being eventually recruited as educators in the primary and secondary schools. In its endeavours to promote science and technology, requests from the primary and secondary sectors are also entertained through visits to the Exhibition Hall consisting of self-explanatory exhibits on various research activities covering modules in their biology syllabus. Apart from the resticted areas in some laboratories, which are in the process of accreditation, students may visit the greenhouses, insectaries and other laboratories meeting specific requests. BSc students mainly from the Faculties of Science and Agriculture at the UoM are encouraged to come for training for about two months under the Students Working Experience Programme (SWEP) which aims at introducing them to professional life in studies dealing with applied biology and environmental issues. Training is also extended to graduates selected by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, under the skills Development Programme for Unemployed Degree and Diploma Holders. School leavers and graduates from institutions including the Management School Trust Fund and the IVTB also undergo training at the MSIRI. A video film on all research departments is usually showed to students who may also have access to the MSIRI library for scientific information. Students often call at the Herbarium and the technical departments for their various assignments. It is also opportune to recognize the material contribution from all its stakeholders to implement its strategic decisions in research and in the promotion of science education and technology development.
