Abstract (AB)Calcium silicate applied to low silicon soils at planting gave annual cane yield increases over a 6 year cycle. The higher level of 14,2 tons per hectare was uneconomical over that period but the lower level of 7,1 t per hectare proved to be generally profitable. A net return from the application of calcium silicate could be expected if the total silica level in the third leaf lamina wass below 1,4 SiO(2 percent dm or if the acid-soluble soil Si was below 77 ppm Si. Although the amount of applied Si not recovered in the plant or int he soil was high, it would appear from results of soil and leaf analysis that futher yield increases could be expected from the silicate already applied.
