| In Mauritius, cooking tomato production is an important industry, the value of which was estimated to be Rs. 195 million in 1993 with a production of 13,000 tonnes cultivated on 1000 hectares of land. Production is highest in the northern districts of Pamplemousses and Rivière du Rempart. During the cyclonic months of February to April, production of tomato is lowest and market prices are usually high. Traditional vegetable growers account for 60 per cent of total production, the remainder being produced by miller planters, tenant planters and various agricultural organizations. Even though tomato can be intercropped with sugar cane, it accounts for only 5 per cent of total production. The main constraints to production are adverse weather, scarcity of land and labour, losses due to pests and diseases, high production costs and low yields. Research on tomato at the MSIRI is currently geared towards minimizing constraints through breeding varieties resistant to pests and diseases, integrated pest management, better cultural practices, reduction of crop cycle in the field, increasing tomato sheld-life, protected culture during the cyclonic period and mechanization. | |
