Abstract (AB)The incidence and pattern of infection by maize streak (MSV) and maize mosaic (MMV) viruses in the local cultivar and in imported hybrids were studied. Imported hybrids were more infected by MSV than the local cultivar, whereas the opposite held for MMV. Build-up of MSV was linear in susceptible imported hybrids when grown close to reservoirs of the virus. The pattern of MMV infection in them was masked by MSV infection. Build-up of the diseases was exponential in the local variety because of its tolerance to both pathogens. Little interference between the diseases was observed in this genotype. The comparative influence of alternative hosts, cropping pattern, vector populations, efficiency of transmission, as well as susceptibility of genotypes on incidence, spread and carry over of MSV and MMV, are analysed.
