| The efficacy of fungicides Benomyl (0.27 kg a.i./ha) and thiophanate-methyl (0.50 kg a.i./ha) applied by helicopter to control yellow spot disease in the profusely flowering variety S17 was evaluated in large trials and commercial plantations where levels of infection varied. Both fungicides reduced infection and alleviated the adverse effect of the disease on sucrose content, sugar yield and juice purity. The disease did not affect cane yield. Two sprays, one in April and one in May, were compared with one spray either in April or in May, when the disease increases exponentially in flowered stalks. Spraying was shown to be economically feasible, giving a return of more than three times the input. Disease control appeared to be improved by the addition of the mineral oil Sunspray 7E to Benomyl. The use of fungicides is considered to be a palliative measure pending the replacement of varieties susceptible to the disease. | |
