Abstract (AB)The prolonged and severe drought of 1998-1999 in Mauritius resulted in physiological immaturity of a significant number of cane fields at harvest. Cane quality in these fields was anticipated to be below milling standards. This was confirmed by samples taken some weeks before the start of the crop season to assess sucrose accumulation. The possibility of improving cane quality by treatment with Fusilade Super (fluazifop-p-butyl) was tested. In eight out of nine trials, Fusilade Super significantly increased sucrose accumulation. Compared with the controls, a higher pol per cent cane dry matter and lower fibre content in treated plots at harvest six weeks after treatment, confirmed this ripening effect. Juice purity was improved to more than the threshold level of 75 per cent thus rendering the canes millable. Cane yield was reduced in all treated plots but significantly only in three trials. However, the increases in sucrose content more than compensated for the loss in cane yields such that higher sucrose yields were obtained in treated plots except for one site. No residual efffect of Fusilade Super was detected in the following year in the ratoon crop. It is concluded that Fusilade super could be appried on immature, water stressed cane to improve cane quality.
