Abstract (AB)The periodicals dealing with sugar, and held at the Science Reference Library, Holborn Branch were scanned. Twelve of them are reported in Part I. Chemical Abstrants (CA), Sugar Industry Abstracts (SIA), Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA), The International Sugar Journal (ISJ) were selected for the study on overlap, coverage and timeliness, using a bibliography on By-products from Sugar Manufacture. The secondary sources are described in Part II. The various tests covered in Part II indicate that SIA provides the best coverage for journal articles, while CA is better for patents. The relative timeliness as calculated by sequential analysis at 0.05 per cent level showed that CA is the most timely of all the services. The largest overlap between two services occurred between SIA and ISJ, and between CA, SIA and ISJ when three services were compared. The literature on the sugar industry is mainly written in English.
