| A cleaner production assessment was conducted in a sugar factory to investigate the possibility of optimizing process operations ranging from field operations to sugar processing with a resulting reduction in waste emissions. The procedure usually involves the use of instrumentation and hence a brief discussion on the measurement equipment and procedures for monitoring water flow rates, electrical power and noise levels is included in the paper. The United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines have been followed and the assessment focused on sugar cane transportation, factory water usage, factory effluent, air pollution control, noise pollution and electrical energy consumption and export. Cleaner Production options were subsequently identified, screened and assessed for their feasibility. It was found that it was possible to use a lighter trailer for cane transportation thus leading to savings in fuel consumption. Cleaner Production options related to factory operations included the replacement of the induced draft fan of the steam plant, with an estimated payback period of less than five months, to increase combustion efficiency and to reduce the amount of particulate matter emitted by the flue gases. The project shows that there are numerous scopes for process optimization through the adoption of a sound environmental policy. The sugar industry will gain from the setting up of Cleaner Production teams with interdisciplinary skills to explore the most promising avenues for waste minimization through the methodical planning and execution of cleaner production assessments | |
