Abstract (AB)This paper presents the results of a study of light interception and evaporation from a sugar cane/maize intercrop in Mauritius. Data are presented for trials carried out after the 1987 first ratoon and these are compared with published data from the previous 1986 plant cane season. In both years soil evaporation was substantial, ranging from 15 to 70 per cent of total evaporation depending on canopy cover. Marked differences were found in the ability of the sugar cane to compete with the maize between the two years. This led us to conclude that maize is an unsuitable intercrop for use in plant cane. The total water requirement of the mixed crop estimated using potential evaporation and crop factors was frequently very different from the measured crop water use. Throughout both seasons the water use of the maize was consistently underestimated and that of the cane overestimated.
